Hello, all!
It is another lovely summer day and for some wonderful reason, I am back writing. Yay!
What I am not doing, however, is being out there on the streets, taking gorgeous photos of dear old Cebu and beyond.
Your girl has aged 70 years over the summer, it seems. I'm all for milk teas and cafes currently, but I'm sure I'll get over this slump and go out on an epic adventure one of these days.
In the meantime, let me share some tried and tested tips on how to enjoy shooting street photos even if the thought kind of makes you nervous. I know, I started out pretty scared at first (as you'll see here), but soon found out that shooting street is one of the best things you can do.
Here are a few tips on how to have a blast while shooting street, even when you're nervous/scared/clueless:

When I was younger, my father would take us on joyrides. The where didn't matter. We just drove anywhere and everywhere. Back then, the new bridge was literally new and there wasn't much of a skyline to look at.

The streets taught me to take photographs. I've never been good at the technicalities. I hate numbers. I can't remember f-stops or focal lengths or metering. I didn't know what settings to set, what buttons to push at the beginning. I wasn't very good at telling people what to do. With the streets, though, you never need to tell it to do anything. It's a living, breathing creature and you're just there to observe.
If you're lucky you'll find something pretty.
And you all know how I like pretty things.

I like spying on people. No, wait, that sounded wrong. I like observing people. I like melting into the background and watch other people and observe. I think I make a really good spy. Nobody pays any heed to me. I'm just the girl with the camera, enjoying the nice view of the channel one cool morning. It is Sunday and families have headed out to take a dip in the sea. Parents perch on the rocks that double as the breakwater, while the children frolic around. The families even bought packed brunch and they share it with each other, right on the water. The kids jump off the rocks and are delighted when a FastCraft passes by and makes waves. It doesn't take much to create joy. I think we gotta learn how to love cheap thrills again.

Malapascua, 2014.
It was a long boat-ride. It made me question if we were going to live through it. It had been raining all day. The sea was rough. It was the very first time I contemplated the odds of a shipwreck, and if so, how was I going to survive. Then the island came into view. The sun shone. Nothing short of a miracle.

It was my last day in big, sprawling Manila. I never liked it much. Too noisy, too dusty, too dirty. Too many street signs. Too many tangled wires and trains. Too much for an island girl. Tagalog also doesn't sound right to my ears as much as Bisaya does; it always felt like I was in a telenovela. Most Manila people would even go as far as to find my language funny.
We were walking along Manila Bay, Mike and I. One of the few places where you can actually have some peace and quiet. A man washes some fish he caught off the bay. The tall buildings nearby loom over him like guardians. And the waters ripple out, perfect circles against the messy imperfection of the capital.
It was my last day in Manila. My cousins were leaving for America, I remember. I was going to board a plane to take me back home later that day. It was a good trip.
