1. Mama’s Little Secret
Literally hidden somewhere in Barangay Opao, you have to follow a small road, cross a bridge and knock on someone’s black gate just to get here. Why go through all this trouble?? Big juicy burgers that some people swear rival the best in the city. Mama’s Little Secret is a burger joint situated in someone’s front yard. If the rumors are true, their burgers should be worth the trip.

2. Kairos by The Lazy Chef
For those who want something healthier, we’ve got Kairos by the Lazy Chef. Its location is a mystery to most people. The only hint is from the many photos found online. Looks like a beautiful rooftop restaurant, but this isn’t just your run of the mill culinary experience. All meals are 100% plant based (Yup, that means no meat). Also, you need to make a reservation ahead of time. Then they text you the exact location once your reservation is confirmed. Is that cool or what? This pretty place offers healthy vegetarian course meals made with ingredients from the chef’s own produce. They even have cooking classes available. Clearly the first of its kind, definitely worth checking out.

3. SACHI Authentic Japanese Ramen Okonomiyaki
Okonomiyaki has finally landed in the island! Sachi has a small, more accessible stall in Parkmall, but if you want to visit their main branch (it’s literally a house) head over to Cabancalan. They offer authentic Japanese okonomiyaki, takoyaki and ramen. We love how their takoyaki is made with plenty of detail and thought. It even has a legit squid inside. Regular patrons swear it is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the island.

4. Minimalist Bar + Bistro
Located smack dab in the busy stretch of Highway Manduae, Minimalist offers live bands, great food and sometimes, art exhibits. Don’t miss the cool exterior perched up in the 3rd floor of Arcada 5. So if you’re into a cool crowd, a few drinks and acoustic sessions, this might just be the hangout for you.

6. Go Go Cafe
Remember Go Morita? When this Japanese national decided to sell his food in the streets outside IT Park, he became a viral hit. People lined up every day to eat his onigiri (Japanese rice balls) and tonkatsu (deep fried meat cutlets). After the success of his trial run, he opened a legit café for your caffeine and Japanese food needs. Tucked away in a private commercial complex, Go Go Cafe is a cozy place that captures the original spark of his days selling on the street.

6. Skillet Japanese Cafe and Bistro
The newest place on the list, we are excited to see what they can offer to the local food scene. Skillet recently opened their doors on March 2016, it looks like a potential diet- destroyer. Their facebook page says it’s all about Western food cooked Japanese style. Curious? We are too. Their wall has a beautiful mural called, “No One Can Live Alone” by Japanese artist Aito Kitazaki. Has this piqued your interest?

7. UNOS Design
Somewhat out of place from its surroundings, UNOS Design is swallowed up by the many jeepneys, commuters and the big beer making factory of San Miguel, but it couldn’t have chosen a better place to stand out. Beautifully designed, the bar/coffee/design shop restores vintage motorcycles and bikes. The entire aesthetic is well thought out; everything from their wall to their chairs are instagrammable. They effortlessly mix and match concepts; bands at night and frappes during the day. Definitely a place to check out.
